Penetrator: Assassination Factor No 40

HIT LIST . . .

The Penetrator felt perplexed as he pondered the list he had
made of the four violent killings. Was there a connection? As he sat in the
Stronghold, he heard a news flash on the radio. Abraham Jones, the moderator of
the biggest and most respected consortium of civil rights groups, in America
was dead. Police said he had been murdered in Jackson, Mississippi, with a knife.
No details were available, no one under suspicion, and no one in custody.

He looked at the list he had labeled with each of the dead
men's names, and added Jones' name, wondering who would be number six. A call
to Dan Griggs at the Justice Department aroused his suspicions that the next
target might be an Arab or an entertainer. "You're saying that there's
some connection here?" Dan asked.

"I'm sure of it, Dan. Positive, but I can't prove it There
are at least two, sometimes three common factors involved. I think some
overzealous patriot has slipped over the edge into insanity and is wiping out a
selected list of people. I've put together a hit list that this killer might be
interested in, people he may try for."

Dan whistled when he heard the names. "You go for the
big ones, don't you? I guess your killer does too. Mail me a copy, and by then
I might have enough background and/ or justification to send out at least an
alert. We want in on the capture if you get anywhere near this guy."

"Or girl—a woman could have done it," Mark added.
"But if it pops, it will go fast, and with you in Washington and me almost
anywhere a target is, it doesn't figure you could get there. But I'll deal you
a hand if I can."
